Accept international payments in Costa Rica without Stripe
Stripe does not currently list Costa Rica as a supported country for a standard payments account. That does not mean every Costa Rican freelancer needs a US company. Choose the receiving rail first, then use the right invoice or payment-link workflow for PayPal, bank transfer, local checkout or USDC.

Direct answer
What replaces Stripe in Costa Rica?
There is no single replacement. A Costa Rican freelancer who wants to charge an overseas client can use PayPal, bank transfer, a local provider, a Merchant of Record or USDC. The correct choice depends on how the client wants to pay, where you can legally receive and withdraw funds, and whether you need only collection or also tax and seller-of-record services.
PayRequest belongs in the collection layer: it creates hosted invoices and payment links and connects them to the provider you control. It does not pretend that Costa Rica is a Stripe-supported country, create foreign bank details or take custody of your money.
Decision matrix
Choose by the job, not the brand name
Start with the client’s payment method and your required settlement destination.
| Your need | Practical route | Best fit | Check before using it |
|---|---|---|---|
| A client wants to pay by PayPal or card | PayRequest + a Costa Rican PayPal Business account | Freelance services, deposits, invoices and reusable payment links | PayPal eligibility, payment methods and fees depend on the account and transaction. |
| A client wants to pay by bank transfer | Your bank or a regulated international-transfer provider | Larger B2B invoices where the client already uses wires or ACH | PayRequest does not issue US bank details or hold a USD balance. |
| You need global SaaS tax handling | A Merchant of Record | Digital products or SaaS where the provider must become seller of record | PayRequest is a billing platform, not a Merchant of Record. |
| The client can pay with a digital-dollar wallet | PayRequest + a USDC wallet | Cross-border payment where both parties deliberately choose USDC | USDC is not a bank deposit; wallet, tax and conversion risks still apply. |
| The customer is local to Costa Rica | A local bank or Costa Rican checkout provider | Domestic CRC payments and familiar local payment behavior | Compare onboarding, settlement, chargebacks and local support directly. |
PayPal through PayRequest
Use this when the client wants a hosted invoice or link and your Costa Rican PayPal Business account is eligible to receive the payment. Funds go to PayPal; PayRequest provides the billing workflow.
Bank or transfer provider
Use this for clients who already pay vendors by wire or another regulated transfer rail. Compare the total receiving, intermediary, FX and withdrawal cost—not only the advertised transfer fee.
USDC payment link
Use this only when both parties understand the wallet and network. PayRequest can create the payment link; you remain responsible for wallet security, records, conversion and local obligations.
Operational workflow
From agreement to verified payment
Choose the settlement destination first
Decide whether the money should arrive in PayPal, a bank account or a USDC wallet. A payment page cannot create provider availability that your receiving account does not have.
Create the right collection object
Use an invoice for a named client and documented balance. Use a reusable payment link for a fixed service, deposit or offer that several customers may buy.
Set currency and terms explicitly
Show USD or CRC, the due amount, what is included, the refund or cancellation terms and who pays any transfer or conversion costs. Never let a client discover the currency at checkout.
Test the complete buyer journey
Open the hosted link as a customer, check the amount and provider, complete a small real transaction when practical, and verify the final status in your own account.
Reconcile before delivering
Match the client, amount, currency, reference and live provider status. A screenshot or forwarded email is not payment verification.
Worked example
A $1,000 design project for a US client
The proposal states a $500 deposit, a $500 final balance and the included files.
The freelancer creates a named USD invoice and connects an eligible PayPal Business account.
The client opens PayPal’s hosted checkout and sees the amount and business details before paying.
The freelancer verifies the live provider status, amount, currency and invoice reference.
The final files are released and the invoice, provider record and delivery confirmation stay linked.
Calculate the total route cost
Do not publish one universal percentage. The real cost can contain provider processing, international surcharges, currency conversion, withdrawal, intermediary-bank and PayRequest fees. PayRequest’s Free plan charges 2% per successful payment, capped at €25 per transaction, on top of provider fees.

Frequently asked questions
Can a Costa Rican business open a standard Stripe account?
As of 30 July 2026, Costa Rica is not listed on Stripe's global page as a supported country for opening a standard payments account. Stripe Atlas is a separate route that creates a US company and carries additional legal, tax and banking obligations.
Can I receive international payments through PayPal in Costa Rica?
PayPal's Costa Rica business pages state that businesses can receive online payments, use invoices or payment formats and transfer settled funds to a local bank. Actual eligibility, payment methods, holds, fees and withdrawal options depend on your PayPal account.
Does PayRequest give me a US bank account or USD routing details?
No. PayRequest creates the invoice, payment link and payment workflow. Funds settle with the connected payment provider or wallet; PayRequest does not issue bank accounts or hold client money.
Is PayRequest a payment processor or Merchant of Record?
No. PayRequest is a billing platform that connects payment providers. Your provider processes and settles the payment. PayRequest does not become the seller of record or automatically handle every sales-tax obligation.
Should a Costa Rican freelancer invoice US clients in USD?
Use the currency agreed with the client and supported by your receiving provider. Before invoicing, check conversion, withdrawal and accounting treatment with your provider, bank and Costa Rican accountant. This guide is operational information, not tax or legal advice.
