Rust server owners can accept donations, subscriptions and several other forms of monetization under Facepunch's current community-server guidelines. The better community decision is narrower: fund predictable infrastructure without selling an unfair competitive advantage.

This guide builds a transparent cost fund. It does not automate kits, currency, queue priority or in-game delivery.

What Facepunch Currently Allows

Facepunch's Community Server and Hosting Guidelines were last updated July 15, 2025. They explicitly allow server operators to charge a fee or subscription, accept donations, sell cosmetics, sell their own server currency, and use advertising or sponsorships, subject to the full legal terms and applicable law.

The same guidelines say servers must be clearly unofficial, must not bypass ownership checks for Facepunch DLC and remain responsible for third-party content and compliance. Because the rules can change, link to the official policy from your admin records and review it after major updates.

“Allowed” Is Not the Same as “Good for Retention”

A permitted purchase can still damage player trust. Separate infrastructure funding from gameplay balance:

Funding choiceFairness riskSafer practice
Voluntary cost contributionLowShow the monthly goal and give no gameplay reward
Cosmetic recognitionMediumCheck ownership and ensure it does not affect combat or progression
Queue priorityMediumDisclose it clearly and monitor the non-paying experience
Resource kits or combat advantagesHighAvoid when the community promises non-pay-to-win play
Random paid rewardsVery highAvoid gambling-like mechanics and get specialist advice

If you promise “no pay-to-win,” define it publicly. A useful definition is that payment never improves damage, survival, gathering, raiding, progression or access to scarce gameplay resources.

Calculate the Real Rust Server Cost

Facepunch's server setup documentation notes that requirements vary with map size and population and lists 12 GB free RAM and SSD/NVMe-preferred storage as a starting point. Hosting is only one line in the community budget.

Add DDoS protection, backups, monitoring, plugins you have permission to use, website/domain, admin tools and payment fees. Then use the game server cost split calculator to model the cost per expected contributor rather than dividing by every Discord account.

Publish a Monthly Cost Ledger

Create a small monthly table:

ItemBudgetActual
Hosting and protection[amount][amount]
Backups and monitoring[amount][amount]
Community tools[amount][amount]
Payment fees[amount][amount]
Closing reserve[amount][amount]

Never publish payer emails or transaction references. Report categories and totals, with optional public recognition only after consent.

Rust Funding Message Template

Keep this wipe funded

This month's verified infrastructure goal is [amount] for hosting, protection, backups and tools. Contributions are optional. This fund does not sell resources, combat advantages or progression.

Contribute: [URL]

We will post the total and expense summary at month-end. Surplus [rolls forward / funds the named upgrade].

When You Need a Store Instead

Use a specialized game-commerce platform if payment must trigger an in-game command, kit, role, subscription entitlement or currency delivery. A PayRequest community-cost page is designed for transparent collection and payment tracking, not Rust plugin fulfillment.

For the no-perk funding model, create a PayRequest account, publish the exact cost goal and link it from Discord and the server description. Read the gaming fundraising hub for the full monthly workflow.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Rust servers accept donations?

Yes. Facepunch's current Community Server and Hosting Guidelines explicitly allow donations and several other monetization methods, subject to the full terms and applicable law.

How can a Rust server avoid pay-to-win donations?

Use contributions only for disclosed infrastructure costs and do not give payers combat, gathering, survival, progression or scarce-resource advantages.

Can PayRequest deliver Rust kits automatically?

No. PayRequest can collect and track a community cost contribution, but it is not an in-game command or kit-delivery platform.
