Damage Deposit(Security Deposit)

A damage deposit (also called a security deposit, caution deposit, or borg in Dutch) is a refundable sum of money collected from a customer before they receive a service, rental property, or equipment. Its purpose is to protect the service provider against potential damages, losses, or unpaid charges that might occur during the rental or service period.

Traditionally, damage deposits were collected as cash or bank transfers, which created problems for both parties. Customers had to part with actual money upfront, and businesses had to manage refund logistics. Modern digital damage deposits use credit card pre-authorization holds, which reserve funds without actually charging the customer.

The pre-authorization approach offers significant advantages. Customers see a pending hold on their card (not an actual charge), the business can capture precisely the amount of any damage (partial capture), and if no damage occurs, the hold is simply released with no money ever changing hands. This eliminates refund processing time and costs.

Key industries that rely on damage deposits include vacation rentals (Airbnb, holiday homes), car rentals, equipment rental companies, event venues, boat charters, and storage facilities. The deposit amount typically ranges from 10% to 100% of the item or service value, depending on the risk profile.
