A DayZ community can accept genuine voluntary donations toward server costs when donors receive no counter-value and non-donors keep access. Once a payment buys access, priority, an item, a cosmetic or another benefit, it becomes monetization and the server operator must follow Bohemia Interactive's current approval rules.
This distinction matters more than the label on the button. Calling a purchase a “donation” does not turn it into one.
Check the Current DayZ Rule Before Collecting Money
Bohemia Interactive's official DayZ support answer says the game is generally licensed for non-commercial use, with voluntary donations without counter-value allowed. Its separate server monetization rules describe the approved paths for private-shard operators that charge for access, advertise, accept sponsored placements or sell permitted non-gameplay-affecting items.
As published in August 2026, monetizing operators must register, be approved and appear on Bohemia's approved DayZ list. The published permission is time-limited, currently through January 31, 2027. Recheck the official page before launch rather than copying an older server's store.
| Payment setup | Practical classification | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Optional contribution, nothing in return | Voluntary donation | Publish the cost goal and keep access unchanged |
| Payment required to join | Monetized access | Review and complete Bohemia's approval process |
| Queue priority, items, cosmetics or other benefits | Monetization | Verify the benefit is permitted and obtain required approval |
| Sponsor placement or advertising | Monetization | Follow the official application and disclosure rules |
These are operational distinctions, not legal advice. Mod authors may impose additional license conditions.
Calculate the DayZ Server Funding Goal
Start with invoices, not an aspirational number. Include hosting, database or backup services, admin tools, website/domain costs, payment fees and a small named reserve. Keep volunteer moderator time outside the cash goal unless the community has explicitly agreed to compensate it.
Use the free game server cost split calculator to calculate both the monthly target and the suggested amount per expected contributor. If the total is £90 and 15 regular players normally contribute, the suggested amount is £6 each. It remains optional unless you deliberately switch to a paid-access model and meet the applicable rules.
Use a Donation Page, Not a Perk Store
For a voluntary cost fund, publish one page that states:
- the exact month or billing period;
- what the target covers;
- whether surplus rolls forward;
- that payment provides no access or gameplay benefit;
- who controls the payment account;
- when the community will receive a reconciliation.
Do not promise loadouts, protected bases, trader currency or faster queue access from a generic donation checkout. Those benefits change the transaction and require a monetization workflow.

We will post the amount collected, fees and bills paid after the month closes. Any surplus will [roll into next month / fund the named upgrade].
Keep Payment Records Private but Totals Visible
Share the total collected and expenditure categories, not donor email addresses, PSP references or billing details. If donor recognition is offered, make it opt-in and confirm that recognition itself does not conflict with the policy you rely on.
For genuine no-counter-value contributions, create a transparent goal page after calculating the budget. If you plan any benefit, stop at the rules check and use Bohemia's approval route first. See the broader gaming server fundraising guide or create a PayRequest account for a voluntary community-cost page.
