You can sell digital downloads without paying a monthly subscription by using a transaction-priced product page. Upload the file, connect a payment provider, publish the checkout and pay only when a sale succeeds. This model is usually the simplest starting point for a seller with irregular sales or no reliable monthly volume.

The important comparison is not “free versus paid.” Every checkout has costs. Compare the platform fee, payment-provider fee, payout rules, tax responsibilities, file limits and the value of any marketplace discovery before choosing.

When a No-Monthly-Fee Checkout Makes Sense

A transaction-priced checkout fits when you are validating a first product, sell seasonally, have uneven demand or do not want fixed software costs before revenue. It can also suit established sellers whose products have healthy margins and who value predictable costs per successful order.

A monthly plan can become economical at higher volume, but only after calculating the break-even point. Use this formula:

Monthly break-even revenue = monthly subscription price ÷ transaction-fee difference

If one platform costs €29 per month and saves two percentage points per sale, the simple break-even is €1,450 in monthly revenue. Provider fees, fixed per-payment charges and currency conversion still need to be added on both sides.

Marketplace, Subscription or Transaction Pricing?

ModelYou payBest fitMain trade-off
MarketplacePercentage of each saleSellers who need marketplace discoveryLess control and usually higher variable cost
Monthly platformSubscription plus provider feesConsistent revenue above the break-even pointFixed cost continues during quiet months
Transaction-priced checkoutFee only after successful paymentNew, seasonal and direct-audience sellersCost scales with sales
Self-hosted storeHosting, plugins and provider feesTeams wanting maximum technical controlMaintenance, security and updates

Do not value marketplace discovery at zero. If a marketplace brings customers you could not reach yourself, its fee pays for a real service. Direct checkout becomes more compelling when buyers already arrive through your newsletter, portfolio, community, social profiles or search traffic.

What a Complete Direct-Selling Setup Needs

Payment collection alone is not enough. A dependable download workflow needs:

  1. A product page explaining formats, compatibility, licence and refund terms.
  2. A commercial payment method connected to the checkout.
  3. Delivery that unlocks only after the provider confirms payment.
  4. A unique download link with sensible limits and expiry.
  5. An order record connecting the buyer, payment and delivered file.
  6. A tested support process for expired links and updated files.

PayRequest combines the hosted product page, connected provider and protected delivery. Every standard feature is included on the Free plan. PayRequest charges 2% per successful payment, capped at €25 per transaction, in addition to the connected provider's fees. There is no monthly subscription required to publish the product.

A Worked Cost Example

Suppose a template sells for €40 and records 20 successful sales in one month. Gross revenue is €800. PayRequest's platform fee is €16. The connected provider's processing fee must be added separately and depends on the merchant, payment method, country and currency.

The correct comparison with another platform is therefore:

gross revenue − platform charges − provider charges − refunds or disputes − currency costs

Avoid comparisons that quietly include processing on one side but exclude it on the other. Also distinguish a direct-provider platform from a Merchant of Record: an MoR may charge more because it can become the legal seller and handle additional tax and compliance work.

Launch Without a Monthly Subscription

Package related assets into a clear ZIP when appropriate, keep an offline master copy and add a README with version and licence information. On the sales page, show the approximate download size and required software before checkout.

Then complete a real low-value test purchase. Confirm the provider reports success, the correct buyer receives the file, the link works in a private browser and the order can be found later. A polished mockup is not evidence that fulfillment works.

When to Move to a Monthly Plan

Recalculate after several months of stable sales. A subscription may make sense when its fee savings consistently exceed the monthly price or when it includes a capability that materially reduces your workload. Do not upgrade only because revenue crossed a round number; use your actual payment mix and average order value.

Create a digital product page when you want to start without a monthly software bill. You can also use the creator platform fee calculator to model your own prices and volume.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I sell digital downloads without a monthly fee?

Yes. A transaction-priced checkout lets you publish without a recurring software subscription and charges only after successful sales. Payment-provider fees still apply.

Is a no-monthly-fee platform always cheaper?

No. At higher stable revenue, a monthly plan with lower transaction fees may cost less. Calculate the break-even using your real sales, order value and provider mix.

Do I need a website?

No. A hosted product page can provide the sales page, checkout and protected download. A website can still help with discovery and long-term brand ownership.
