Wero is Europe's new unified payment system created by 16 major European banks. It replaces local methods like iDEAL (Netherlands), Giropay (Germany), and Paylib (France) to create a single cross-border payment solution, reducing Europe's dependence on American payment networks.
The transition starts in January 2026 with co-branding ('iDEAL | Wero'). Full migration happens throughout 2026-2027, with iDEAL expected to be completely phased out by the end of 2027.
If you use a payment provider like Mollie, Stripe, or PayRequest, the migration is automatic. Your provider handles the technical transition. Only businesses with direct iDEAL integrations need to make changes.
EPI has promised Wero won't be more expensive than iDEAL for the first two years. However, Wero uses a percentage-based fee model (with caps) rather than iDEAL's flat €0.29 fee, so long-term pricing may differ.
Yes! This is a major benefit. Wero enables cross-border payments across the Netherlands, Germany, France, Belgium, and Luxembourg with the same integration—something iDEAL couldn't do.
Existing iDEAL integrations will continue working during the transition period. Payment providers will automatically migrate to Wero's infrastructure. Direct integrations may need updates, but the customer experience stays familiar.
