What Is Bancontact?

Bancontact (formerly Bancontact/Mister Cash) is Belgium's national payment scheme, similar to how iDEAL works in the Netherlands. Every Belgian bank card comes with Bancontact built-in.

  • Linked directly to Belgian bank accounts — no separate registration needed
  • Works via card number, QR code, or the Payconiq by Bancontact app
  • Instant bank-to-bank transfers with strong authentication (3D Secure)
  • Supported by all Belgian banks: KBC, BNP Paribas Fortis, ING, Belfius, Argenta, and more
  • Available for online payments, in-app payments, and point-of-sale

Bancontact Fees

Bancontact fees vary by payment provider. Both Stripe and Mollie support Bancontact.

Via Mollie

€0.39 per transaction

Flat fee regardless of amount. Best for higher-value transactions. Native Bancontact support with QR code option.

Via Stripe

1.5% + €0.25

Percentage-based. Better for small transactions under €10. Bancontact available in Stripe's European payment methods.

For a €50 payment: Mollie charges €0.39, Stripe charges €1.00. For a €10 payment: Mollie charges €0.39, Stripe charges €0.40. Mollie is cheaper for most Belgian transactions.
