How Online Credit Card Deposits Work
Collecting a deposit by credit card online is simple with the right tools:
- ✓Send a link: Customer clicks, enters their card, and the hold is placed instantly
- ✓QR code at reception: Guest scans and authorizes their card on their own phone
- ✓Automated email/SMS: Send deposit requests before arrival with one click
3 Ways to Collect Credit Card Deposits Online
Smart Link with Pre-Authorization
Create a payment link that places a hold on the customer's credit card. Share via email, SMS, WhatsApp, or embed on your website.
QR Code at Reception
Display a QR code at your front desk or reception area. Customers scan with their phone and complete the deposit authorization on their own device.
Email or SMS Deposit Link
Automatically send a deposit request to your customer's email or phone number before they arrive. They complete the authorization at their convenience.
Who Uses Online Credit Card Deposits
Hotels & Boutique Stays
Send a pre-arrival deposit link so guests authorize their credit card before check-in. No queues at reception, no physical terminal needed.
Car & Vehicle Rentals
Collect security deposits online when customers book a vehicle. Pre-authorize their card remotely and capture only for fuel, damage, or late returns.
Equipment & Tool Rentals
Hold deposits on credit cards for rented equipment — cameras, power tools, AV gear. Customers authorize from home before pickup.
Vacation Rentals & Airbnb
Collect damage deposits from guests who book directly (outside of Airbnb). Send a link with the booking confirmation and hold the deposit automatically.
Event Venues & Halls
Secure deposits for venue bookings without handling cash. Send a payment link with the contract and capture only if post-event cleanup or damage charges apply.
Photography & AV Equipment
Hold deposits when lending out expensive cameras, lenses, or studio equipment. The QR code method works great for on-site pickups.
Important Things to Know
- •Credit cards only: Pre-authorization (holding funds) only works with credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, Amex). Debit cards, iDEAL, SEPA, and Bancontact process payments immediately — they cannot hold funds.
- •No iDEAL or SEPA holds: If your customers primarily use iDEAL or bank transfers, you will need to charge the deposit upfront and refund later. Only credit cards support the hold-and-release model.
- •3D Secure verification: Online credit card deposits require 3D Secure (SCA) authentication. The customer verifies via their banking app or SMS code. This adds security but means the customer must be available to approve.
- •Pending charge visibility: Pre-authorized amounts appear as pending charges on the customer's credit card statement. Inform customers upfront so they do not mistake the hold for an actual charge.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I collect a security deposit online without a card terminal?
Yes. With PayRequest, you send a payment link via email, SMS, or QR code. The customer enters their credit card details on a secure online payment page. No physical terminal or card reader is needed.
Does the customer need to be present to authorize a deposit?
No. That is the main advantage of online deposit collection. You send a link, and the customer authorizes their credit card from any device, anywhere. They complete 3D Secure verification via their banking app.
Can I hold a deposit on a debit card?
In most cases, no. Pre-authorization holds are only reliably supported on credit cards. Debit cards in some countries may allow short holds, but it is not guaranteed. For debit card customers, charge the deposit and refund later.
How long does an online credit card hold last?
With Mollie, holds last up to 28 days. With Stripe, holds last up to 7 days. After the hold period expires, the funds are automatically released back to the customer's card.
Is online deposit collection secure?
Yes. All online deposit payments are processed through PCI-DSS compliant payment providers (Stripe, Mollie). 3D Secure authentication adds an extra layer of security, and card details are never stored on your server.
