To sell digital downloads with PayPal, combine an eligible merchant payment flow with a way to deliver the purchased file. A PayPal payment link can take the payment; your delivery system must connect the confirmed sale to the correct ebook, template, ZIP or audio file. Choose both parts before promoting the link.

This guide is for creators and small sellers launching paid downloads through email, social media or their own website. You do not necessarily need a full online store. You do need a clear offer, an eligible PayPal account, a file you can legally sell and a dependable purchase-to-download journey.

PayPal merchant links are checkout, not a file library

PayPal's current Payment Links and Buttons documentation describes hosted merchant checkout for products, services and donations. It is different from a personal PayPal.Me profile. Depending on account and region, checkout can offer cards and wallets; do not promise the same methods to every buyer.

A merchant link can sell a digital item. That does not establish that it stores your file or sends a protected download. Ask how the chosen setup verifies payment, identifies the product and delivers access. A public cloud-drive URL on a thank-you page can be copied before or after payment and is not equivalent to order-linked fulfillment.

Choose the smallest selling setup that completes the job

Selling setupFits whenTradeoff to check
PayPal merchant link plus manual file deliveryYou sell occasionally and can fulfill each paid order yourselfResponse time, correct file identity and delivery records become your work
Existing PayPal checkout plus FetchAppYou want to keep checkout and add automatic fulfillmentSupported integration, product mapping, storage and delivery plan
A hosted digital storefront such as SellfyYou need a catalog and a broader store workflowCurrent plan requirements and features at your selling scale
PayRequest digital product page with PayPalYou want a shareable offer with order-linked file deliveryEligible connected provider, product setup and current plan limits
Your own ecommerce store with a download extensionYou already operate a store and need more customizationHosting, extension compatibility, updates and delivery ownership

FetchApp's PayPal integration explicitly offers delivery after checkout. Sellfy's official selling guide describes a hosted-store approach. These are alternatives to evaluate, not a first-hand test or an assurance that one provider is best for every seller.

If all you need is one-off collection for a service, use the invoice-versus-link decision guide. A download sale additionally needs fulfillment.

Work through a €24 download offer

Suppose you sell a fictional €24 design bundle containing source files, exported previews and a license. Prepare the exact customer ZIP, state the compatible software and describe the permitted use. A buyer should know whether client work is allowed and whether redistribution is prohibited before paying.

At 50 sales, gross receipts would be 50 × €24 = €1,200. This is a hypothetical illustration, not sales achieved by a customer. It excludes tax, refunds, disputes, currency conversion and your production costs.

Use your actual provider percentage p and fixed fee f to estimate payment processing: 50 × (€24 × p + f). For example, if your quote were 3% + €0.35, the modeled processing amount would be 50 × (€0.72 + €0.35) = €53.50. Those inputs are invented worksheet assumptions, not PayPal's published rate. Replace them with your own account and country's current merchant fees.

PayRequest plan in this standard-payment examplePlatform calculationPlatform amount before provider fees
Free€1,200 × 2%€24
Active PremiumMonthly subscription, 0% standard platform payment fee€5
Active BusinessMonthly subscription, 0% standard platform payment fee€20

The current pricing page confirms these rates. Features and plan limits differ, so a lower modeled payment cost alone does not choose the right plan. Provider fees apply on every plan. Commission payments have a separate 2% fee, capped at €25 per payment; this ordinary download example does not use that payment type.

For eligible standard payments, €250 monthly volume × 2% = €5. That compares Free's platform fee with Premium's subscription only; it does not promise a particular payout, tax result or overall business profit.

Match the product, payment and delivered file

Use this original acceptance card when comparing platforms. It specifies what you should verify; we have not made a live purchase for this article.

Buyer stageAcceptance requirementEvidence you should retain
OfferExact bundle, currency, license and requirements are clearPublished product description and edition
CheckoutThe order identifies the selected productProduct and order reference
PaymentDelivery follows a confirmed payment, not a screenshotProvider transaction linked to the paid order
DeliveryCustomer receives the purchased editionFile name/version and delivery record
RecoveryA buyer can contact you if access expires or failsContact route and documented resend process

If two bundles both cost €24, the amount alone cannot identify which file to deliver. Keep a distinct product identity through checkout and fulfillment. Protecting the delivery URL reduces casual sharing; it does not prevent a paying buyer from copying or redistributing the file. Licensing and customer communication still matter.

PayPal's guidance for digital-goods sellers recommends delivery documentation and download confirmations. Preserve relevant records without claiming guaranteed Seller Protection: eligibility and dispute outcomes depend on applicable terms and transaction facts.

Use PayRequest when you need a linked offer and automatic delivery

PayRequest digital products combine the product offer with paid-order delivery. The reviewed implementation stores files privately and uses order-linked download tokens with expiry and download-limit checks. Those controls are product behavior verified in code, not a completed end-to-end checkout test.

Create an account, connect an eligible PayPal merchant account, upload the approved file, set the price and publish its product link. Open the customer page and verify the offer. Then use an appropriate purchase check to verify payment and delivery before announcing the launch. Available payment methods depend on connected providers and account eligibility.

If you already have checkout you like and only lack delivery, an add-on such as FetchApp may be sufficient. If you want to launch a shareable download offer and keep payment and fulfillment together, start with PayRequest's digital selling workflow. Upload one product before expanding the catalog.

Check the exact buyer file before publishing

For an illustrative €25 file pack, record these four states: the public offer describes the exact files and license; checkout carries the same amount and currency; the receiving account or order confirms payment; the supported delivery flow makes the correct file available. Test the configured flow before inviting real buyers. This is a proposed checklist, not a claim of a completed purchase test.

Keep timestamps and delivery records where supported. PayPal’s digital goods guidance explains why electronic evidence matters. A download record does not guarantee a dispute outcome. Use PayRequest digital products for the supported workflow; a bare PayPal.Me payment does not itself deliver a file.

Questions before choosing

Can a PayPal payment link sell a digital item?

Yes. A merchant link can collect payment for a digital item; verify separately how the purchased file is stored and delivered.

Do I need a website to sell downloads?

No. A hosted product page can present the offer, take payment and provide delivery. An existing website can link to that page.

Does protected delivery prevent all file sharing?

No. Order-linked access protects the delivery route but a paying buyer can still copy the file. State clear license terms.

Is the provider fee in the example a PayPal rate?

No. The 3% plus €0.35 inputs are explicitly hypothetical. Replace them with the terms of your merchant account.
