What is SEPA Direct Debit?

SEPA Direct Debit is the Eurozone's bank-debit standard — a low-fee mandate-based pull payment that runs across 36 European countries.

SEPA Direct Debit (SDD) is part of the Single Euro Payments Area, a regulatory framework that unifies bank transfers and direct debits across 36 European countries. Your customer signs a SEPA mandate once — typically inside the hosted checkout from your SEPA payment link — and from that moment you can pull funds from their IBAN on a recurring schedule.

With PayRequest, SEPA mandates are captured by sharing a payment link. Subsequent charges run automatically with PayRequest's dunning automation retrying any failed pulls at the right intervals. The same flow handles one-off invoices, monthly retainers, hosting subscriptions, agency contracts and any other recurring B2B billing.

SEPA is by far the cheapest payment method in Europe — typically €0.20 per pull via Mollie, or 0.8% capped at €5 via Stripe. Versus 1.4% card fees on a €2,400 invoice, that's tens of euros saved per transaction. PayRequest charges 0% on top.

FAQ

SEPA payment links

What is a SEPA payment link?
A SEPA payment link lets your customer pay you via bank transfer or set up a direct debit mandate inside the Eurozone. They click the link, fill in their IBAN, confirm — done. Perfect for B2B invoices and subscriptions.
What's the difference between SEPA Credit Transfer and SEPA Direct Debit?
Credit Transfer = your customer pushes the money to you (one-off invoices). Direct Debit = you pull money from their account on a schedule (subscriptions, retainers). Both are supported via PayRequest payment links.
How much does SEPA cost?
SEPA is the cheapest payment method in Europe. Mollie charges around €0.25 per transfer; Stripe charges 0.8% capped at €5 for direct debits. PayRequest itself charges 0%. Massive savings on invoices over a few hundred euros.
How long does a SEPA payment take?
SEPA Instant (newer, supported by most banks) settles in under 10 seconds. Standard SEPA settles within 1 business day. SEPA Direct Debit pulls funds within 2-3 business days of the scheduled date.
Which countries support SEPA?
All 36 SEPA member states: every Eurozone country plus Switzerland, UK, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Monaco and others. Coverage is essentially the entire European economic area.
